Buying a backyard shed is a more considered decision than many people initially realise. There are a range of factors from site conditions to council rules to intended use that can significantly affect which shed is right for you and how the purchase and build will unfold. Here is a practical pre-purchase checklist to help you buy with confidence.
1. What will I primarily use this shed for ?
Your intended use drives almost every other decision. A storage only shed has very different requirements to a hobby space or workshop. Bet honest with yourself about your primary use case and factor in any secondary uses you might want in the future.

2. What is my available footprint ?
Measure your available space carefully before you shop. Pick a size that will not only work in your sized backyard, but also for what you intent to use it for! Remember to also measure for access, can a pallet be delivered and moved from your front kerb to the intended site?
3. Do I need council approval ?
In many areas across Australia, smaller sheds may qualify as exempt development and not require council approval, provided they meet specific size, height, and setback requirements.
As rules vary by state, council, zoning, and site conditions, we always recommend checking with your local council before purchasing.
4. What base will I use ?
The base is often overlooked but is critical to the long-term performance of your shed. Decide on your base type, whether its a cocreate slab or one of our steel subframe kits before you order and ensure it will be ready before it is time to build the shed.
5. What size is right ?
As a general rule, its better to go bigger than smaller if your space allows it. People consistently underestimate how quickly storage space fills up over time. If budget (and space) allows, choose the next size up from what you think you need, just to be safe.

6. Do I need power to the shed ?
If you plan to use power tools, lighting beyond a torch, a bar fridge, or any electrically powered lifestyle equipment, you will need a power supply. Factor the cost of a licensed electrician’s installation into your overall budget before you buy.
7. What is the delivery situation at my property ?
Trekk Spaces are delivered to your kerbside by pallet. Its important to consider: can a delivery truck access your street? How far is the kerb from your intended site? Do you have equipment or enough people to move the pallet?
8. What is my finishing plan ?
Some Trekk Spaces sheds arrive pre-primed, but a finishing topcoat of exterior paint is strongly recommended after assembly. Budget for paint, sealant, and brushes as part of your total project cost.
9. Do I have a second pair of hands to help with assembly ?
Most sheds require two people to assemble safely and efficiently. Confirm you have someone who is able to help, lined up before your shed arrives, or budget for a professional assembler if needed.
10. What is my total project budget ?
The purchase price of the shed is just the starting point. Your total project budget should include the base, any electrical work, assembly help if needed, paint and sealant, any internal fitout (shelving, workbench, flooring), and security hardware. Planning for the full cost upfront avoids unpleasant surprises.
